Being Present
When the Future Looks Brighter than Today
We are told that we need to be more present. To live in the “now”.
We hear that we should breathe more, breathe deeper, exhale slower.
We read that we need to practice self-care and be in tune with our thoughts.
But we live in a world with restrictions.
One of loneliness and confusion.
A world that breads anxiety.
We know that we are too focused on the future.
But the future means group hugs and toasting with friends at the bar.
The future means shaking hands and seeing each other smile.
So why would we focus on the now when the future looks so promising?
Would you turn off a movie because there are more being filmed?
Would you stay inside on a warm sunny day because a warmer day is coming?
Would you hold in a laugh because you might hear a funnier joke?
The future may look brighter than today, but that doesn’t mean our present is dark.
Pausing to acknowledge small moments of joy, to celebrate the warmth of spring, or to share the highlights of our day, helps create a present that we want to live in.
We can look forward to the days of big family dinners and backyard barbeques while embracing the present.
Why postpone joy when there is nothing to lose?
You deserve to be happy now and always.
And while we patiently wait for concerts and chocolate fountains and normal delivery schedules, I’ll be sending love …
from me to you.
